It's not conclusive but today's data does not rule out an economic contraction in the second quarter and therefore a recession. And there are not only concerns around growth. Unemployment is at its highest level in over a decade. Business confidence is down. The Rand is under pressure. Many state-owned entities are only operating because of government bailouts and credit rating agency Moody's suggested this week that Eskom urgently needs a turnaround plan. Several business groups have raised concern including Business Unity South Africa, BUSA, which said this week it was concerned about some of the developments at Eskom.
