When you press the save button, a point is created at that location. The main difference between this and using the as-built feature is these stored points are associated with what you are laying out. For example, if you are laying out a point called "100", when you press the save button it will create a point called "100_stk".
This feature is also helpful because you can see what you have laid out and what still needs to be laid out.
The main reason to use this feature is to "cover your ass". If later on, something is wrong, somebody will probably say, "well, you laid it out." You can use this to check exactly what you laid out and hopefully the mistake is not your fault.
