Event Details
According to Gartner Research, 85% of data analytics projects fail to give value. Gartner blames “management resistance and business culture”. But maybe we shouldn’t blame our clients. Experienced analysts know that the key to success is close engagement with clients -- our boss, senior executives, and other decision makers. The field of decision analysis offers a variety of practical tools that can help us engage more effectively with our clients and so provide analytic insights that provide real value to them. I will describe key elements:
• Ask good questions, listen effectively, and gain clients’ trust.
• Draw influence diagrams to help our clients frame and scope their objectives and decisions.
• Be explicit about risk and uncertainty.
• Use sensitivity analysis to discover which data and assumptions matter to the results and why.
• Employ agile modeling to build effective decision tools.
• Design compelling visualizations and interactive models to help clients appreciate insights.
I will illustrate these with examples from important applications in energy and environment.
