Description: I went up to the highlands to photograph the mountain hares in their winter coats - I was really hoping for some snowy conditions as well, but it was unseasonably warm at the end of January and there was very little snow left on the hills. It must have been a stressful time for the hares, which are well camouflaged for snow, but really very obvious against the snowless hillside! Rather than sleep in my car, I decided to camp up on the hill - I really enjoy wild camping and this was my first opportunity of 2020 to spend a night in the tent. Also, by trudging up the hill in the night I was able to have a nice long sleep and wake up in positon, ready to head out and find the hares... I really didn't have to go very far!

I took the Nikon Z7 with the 500mm f/5.6 PF lens and it proved once again to be a great lightweight combination for wildlife photography in the hills - this was exactly the kind of trip I had in mind when I bought the lens 👍

While I couldn't stay for more than the day because of house moves and work trips, I had a fantastic day out with the hares, several of which were incredibly chilled out about me being there, and I got some photographs that I'm really pleased with. It was such a privilege to spend time with these relaxed animals in their environment, and I think I felt an even closer connection with them because I had also been living in their world by camping there overnight!
