Amazing video of thousands of egrets arriving at their night roost in Cambodia This video shows many thousands of cattle egrets arriving at a mango grove that is their night roost in a small town in Cambodia, about one hour south of Battambang on Route 5. It was recorded February 13, 2020 at sunset. The roost is on private property and, to my knowledge, is totally unknown to the Cambodian birding community. I learned of the site through friends, and was lucky to meet the owner and be invited in to watch the egrets fly in before landing in the tops of the trees. It was like nothing I've ever seen in 20 years of birding, as thousands of egrets circled and more flew in from several directions every minute. Where the birds are coming from is unclear. There is no major water source nearby, and Lake Tonle Sap is 40 km away. The owner estimates 30,000 egrets roost there in January, though the number is truly uncountable. The birds are generally there from November through January or February. Fortunately, the owner is doing his best to protect the egrets-- with a gate, fencing, and 10 dogs to patrol the grounds, which are about 2 hectares (5 acres). But he could definitely use help protecting this invaluable bird resource, especially for the longterm. Anyone interested in helping or learning more is welcome to contact me at brad5000@gmail.com.
