Self-evaluation is an essential part of growing as a teacher. You probably reflect throughout the day about the success of a lesson or what you could have done better. But, many teachers fall into the trap of stopping there. After all, thoughts are fleeting and valuable insights into your teaching can be lost in the busyness of the day. So, it’s important to set aside some quiet time to not only reflect but also write down your conclusions.
One of the most effective ways to keep yourself focused during this process is through the use of a written self-assessment tool like the one we’ve created here. You can see in the bold headings we have compiled some of the categories that we believe are most important to being a quality educator. Underneath, we have listed goals for that category and a quick checklist to see how often you achieve those goals. Then there is a notes section at the end of each category for any additional information you need to add.
Once you’ve completed all the categories, there is a page devoted to a more in-depth reflection. Here, you’ll look at which category you consistently meet your goals and which category you should continue to improve. Then you’ll work on planning on how to achieve those goals in the future.
It’s important to note that this tool we created is not meant to be all-encompassing. There are obviously more facets to teaching than what is covered in this reflective activity. However, this tool will get you to think about many important goals in the classroom while not being overly time-consuming. We have made it available for you to download at the link below. So, we encourage you to print off a copy, complete it with honest introspection, and then use it as a springboard to propel your growth as a teacher!
