Iran: Documents Indicate U.S. 'Attempting to Take Advantage' of Protests - FM Spokesperson

Iran: Documents Indicate U.S. 'Attempting to Take Advantage' of Protests - FM Spokesperson Seyyed Abbas Mousavi, a spokesperson for the Iranian foreign minister, said documents indicated the United States has been trying to "take advantage" of protests in the country. Mousavi was speaking at a weekly press conference in Tehran on Monday.

"I do not reject their [US] abuse of these events and there are also documents indicating that they are attempting to take advantage of these events and they also tend to see that people are under pressure until they might put pressure on the government," said Mousavi, though he did not elaborate on the documents in question.

"We are surprised with the level of foreign diplomacy of some countries, their foreign ministers and foreign ministry spokespersons have lowered their ranks so badly that they ask [protesters] to send them videos and reports on burning of banks, ATMs and buildings," he added.

Protests erupted across Iran on November 16, after the government announced a 50 per cent hike in petrol prices and introduced fuel rationing.

The government said that the income generated from the reform would help to purchase basic goods and medicine, pay pensions and employees of state-owned institutions, and easing the burden of US sanctions on the national economy.
