Education is a permanent asset for women which none could steal. Education will support them in their day-today life and also during exigencies, said Mr S.Jeyakumar, Superintendent of Police, Villupuram district.

He was delivering a speech at the Annual Sports Day – Blaze’20—of Theivanai Ammal College for Women (Autonomous) held on September 27, 2019. He said that as reading is an exercise for mind/intellect, sports is essential for keeping the body flexible and healthy.

Mr Jeyakumar reminisced that during his college days he was a University Basketball player, participated in 4—5 national events. “Sports enhance self confidence and rejuvenate the body,” he said.

He cited the instance of Badminton player Sindhu who through her hard work and relentless efforts had won the World No.1 position. All women could achieve such laurels, provided they persevere in their endeavour.
The SP pointed out that women face four kinds of problems such as, Child marriage, Sexual harassment, Child labour and Subjugation to others. Until getting married, a woman would abide by the direction of parents, after marriage she would have to carry out the biddings of the husband and at old age she would have to depend upon her son/daughter.
He noted that Poet Bharathi, Swami Vivekananda and E.V.Ramasamy strove for liberating women from shackles. Bharathi visualized modern women who would stand erect and keep the head high.

“Education acts as a tool for women to bring out their talents. When a man is educated, his family will be benefited; when a woman is educated the society and the nation would benefit,” he said.

Statistics reveal that after schooling, only 30% of women pursue higher education. In the case of men, 70% go for higher education.
It is a matter of pride that Chairman of Theivanai Ammal College Mr E.Swamikannu had started the institution in 1983 with the singular objective of providing and promoting higher education for women in the backward Villupuram district.

The SP posed a question:”Why should women go for higher education?” and sought to answer as follows: after marriage 40% of women get separated from their husbands or get a divorce.

There are 7 All Women Police Stations in Villupuram districts which collectively receive on an average 40 complaints a day from women, alleging extramarital affairs of their spouses, husbands ditching wives, husbands not turning up for months and so on.

Mr Vijeykumar said that it was his personal opinion that women should study till the age of 23 years and then only think of marriage. Kerala remains an advanced State because there women continue their studies till the age of 25-26 years.

If any untoward incident occurs in life, education would stand women in good stead. The SP made a reference to the achievements of Dr Muthulakshmi Reddy, the first woman doctor in the country, who had contributed a great deal for abolition of sati, freeing women from shackles, protecting their rights and getting for them equal rights in parental property.

In Villupuram, some girl students committed suicide after failing in the Plus 2 examinations. Girls should give up the suicidal tendency. The failed candidates should muster courage to clear the examinations, sit for competitive examinations and get placements.

The SP called upon women to know about their rights and acquaint themselves with laws such as Dowry Prohibition Act, Sexual Harassment (Prevention) of Women Act, Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act and Child Marriage Act.

Quoting Plato, the SP said that “it is better not to be born than not to get educated.” He made a special mention about the absolute necessity of observing the traffic rules to avoid road accidents and save lives. “We are not born to die in road accidents,” he said emphatically.
Mr Vijeykumar exhorted the women students to “arise, awake, and stop not till the goal is reached.”
