SUMMARY REPORT – WEEK CLOSE, YEAR 1,021 A.C.
Lieutenant Arcturus, 3rd Battalion, Blackstone Legion – in a communique to Holden Cross
I ask that this be passed directly up the chain of command. Warlord Apollyon must be made aware of this transgression. The Black Prior in charge of my unit, Ilsa Siegfaust, has deliberately and purposefully disobeyed a direct order given to her by Warlord Apollyon herself. The company was to capture and occupy a Warborn Viking port village and leave no survivors, however the initial scouting reports returned the information that the Savages were well prepared for an attack, and entrenched into their positions. Secondary passes made by scouts seemed to convince Siegfaust that the Savages were not expecting our company at all, rather they were preparing for an attack from a different party. She repeatedly cited the fact that the village was not flying Warborn Viking colors nor symbols, instead flying a lone blue flag with a crossed sword and spear as the ensign. She became somehow concerned that this was a neutral settlement not associated with the Warborn. Siegfaust wrote several times in dispatches to seek advice from Warlord Apollyon, but I was never consulted as to the results of these communiques, and can only assume the worst, as Siegfaust seemingly became increasingly disenfranchised with the concept of taking this port village.
I argued that this made no difference and that orders were orders. I attempted to convince her that we were wasting valuable time, days waiting to see if something happened, when we needed that port for the grain stores and the strategic location. Who cared if they were different Savage Heathens, Black Priors are supposed to kill those kinds of rabble anyway, or at least that was the impression I had gotten from hearing tales of the Priors Vortiger and Erzabet. It has become increasingly apparent that I have neither as a commanding officer, rather a weak-willed pretender.
We continued to waste time for days, until at last the settlement came under attack from Warborn forces. It was a relatively small force, but the village itself was small, and was exceedingly strained by the assault. Siegfaust ordered the company to engage the Warborn attackers, and after six days of waiting in the cold, the troops were angry and eager. We carved through them with little trouble, and made short work of the Vikings. However, I had thought we would swoop in and take advantage of the weakened defenses – effectively rolling straight over the village too – but Siegfaust instead chose to disobey direct commands and open a parlay with the village.
For two more days the company’s time was wasted as Siegfaust elected to talk with these Savages. Her report on the subject is attached, you may read it if you please, but it says nothing of value. After she was finished, Prior Siegfaust confided that this village was headed by a Highlander – I believe that was the word she used, not that I care what the Savages call themselves – and a Valkyrie, who appeared to be chaperoning a rogue settlement of Vikings not following the Warborn doctrine. For thanks for aid, the Savages provided us with grain and fresh boots and blankets, and Siegfaust ordered the company to withdraw.
I write you now for formal advice on how to proceed.
