0:00:00 Hi, this is John.
0:00:02 Last July we stayed a couple of nights at Robe,
and we found the "Robe Chinese Monument ".
0:00:06 A simple tribute to the migrant workers who landed here before walking hundreds of miles to Victoria's gold mines.
0:00:12 This simple yet poignant memorial marks the start of the last leg of the long, difficult journey Chinese migrant workers took to reach Australia’s gold mines.
0:00:20 It stands near the spot where they first came ashore before trekking hundreds of miles to the mines.
0:00:25 The gold rush in Ballarat, Victoria, attracted many Chinese migrants.
0:00:29 In 1855, to discourage this, Victoria started charging a 10-pound fee to any Chinese migrants who arrived within the state.
0:00:36 To avoid paying the extra tax, ships bearing Chinese migrants started landing in Robe, South Australia because it’s outside Victoria’s borders.
0:00:43 The workers then had to walk almost 200 miles to the mines at Ballarat.
0:00:47 It was a long, difficult journey, and many of the miners died along the way.
0:00:51 In all, more than 16,000 Chinese workers landed in Robe.
0:00:55 Their arrival transformed the city’s economy.
0:00:58 The population boomed, and soon local residents began serving as guides or starting other services to accommodate the rush of immigrants.
0:01:04 Some used their personal boats to help ferry the new arrivals ashore while others helped escort them to the mines.
0:01:10 The monument commemorates the migrants.
0:01:12 The 10-foot-tall stone bears a plaque showing images of a ship, mining gear, and Chinese workers carrying their belongings.
0:01:18 A red “welcome gate” with beautiful calligraphy was erected on the beach behind the stone in 2017 to mark where the workers first stepped ashore.
0:01:26 We think the "Robe Chinese Monument "
and it is one of the better places of Robe.
0:01:30 Have you ever been to Robe? Please let us know about your favorite "places to visit" in the comments and we try to make a review about this venue as soon as possible.
