Hundreds of protesters took to the streets of Lima, on Friday, in support of families from the Cerro de Pasco region whose children have cancer they attribute to due to heavy metal pollution from mining activities.

Footage showed the protesters carrying banners reading, "The government kills the children of Pasco" and "Mr [President Martin] Vizcarra: our children are dying with lead in their blood because of Volcan and Milpo", referring to two Peruvian mining companies operating in the region.

Marco Castaneda, whose daughter has cancer, said, "I am in front of the Ministry of Health to demand that they see the children who are dying. In Cerro de Pasco, there are more than two thousand children contaminated with toxic heavy metals that have been consuming their lives."

He added, "Children have already died in anonymity and therefore Cerros de Pasco is in crisis."

Protesters demanded that "the contaminated children be treated abroad" and warned the president they "will not go back if there is no solution."

The government is indifferent, not giving them a solution. What they ask for is immediate attention so that children who have cancer are transferred to another country, such as Argentina, so they can be treated," said MP Luis Simeon Hurtado, .

Since last February 17th, five of the 34 affected families have been sleeping outside the Ministry of Health, waiting for a solution to their demands.
