WATCH: Trump lawyer Sekulow says House managers' call for witnesses is a 'smokescreen'

WATCH: Trump lawyer Sekulow says House managers' call for witnesses is a 'smokescreen' Jay Sekulow, the personal attorney to President Donald Trump, pushed back against the House managers' calls for more witnesses and documents, listing the names of past witnesses who have testified in the proceedings. Sekulow said the House managers' call for witnesses is a "smokescreen."

"You've heard from a lot of witnesses," he said. The problem with the House managers' position is, Sekulow said, "Even with all those witnesses, it doesn't prove an impeachable offense. The articles fail."

After days of arguments posed by the House managers and Trump’s legal team, followed by questions posed by senators, the lawmakers debate and vote on whether they wish to subpoena new witnesses and documents on Friday, Jan. 31. Then the Senate must decide whether to acquit the president or convict him of the charges and remove him from office. The House of Representatives impeached Trump in December on two articles -- abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.
