Squats result in more hypertrophy than Hip Thrust in 12 week study - Research Review

Squats result in more hypertrophy than Hip Thrust in 12 week study - Research Review The Hip Thrust, made popular by Bret Contreras has been a point of controversy for many years. In research using EMG the Hip thrust had shown to have a superior EMG rating than a squat in the glute max. However this is more a reflexion of the muscles contractile length in the two exercises as opposed to the actual mechanical tension in the muscle.

This applied study shows the limitation of EMG in evaluating exercise effectiveness on a comparison scale in these study design. Actual hypertrophy is going to come from exercises that are able to place a stretch on the muscle under load. That doesn't mean there are not places for exercise like the glute bridge and 45 extension in your programming. It will depend on goals and many other factors.
