SWITZERLAND could be about to follow in the footsteps of Britain and have their own Brexit moment as the country holds a referendum on its relationship with the EU.Switzerland is set to hold a vote on Schengen, the area comprising 26 European countries that have officially abolished all passport and all other types of border control. While an EU initiative, the Schengen area also includes Iceland, Norway, Switzerland and Lichtenstein, none of which are member states. The May 17 vote will see Swiss residents vote on whether they want to regain control of their borders.Switzerland is set to hold a vote on Schengen, the area comprising 26 European countries that have officially abolished all passport and all other types of border control. The May 17 vote will see Swiss residents vote on whether they want to regain control of their borders.According to Swiss authorities, Schengen was responsible for 55,000 immigrants in the country last year.The largest groups of EU citizens living in the country are from Italy, Germany, France, and Portugal.In total there were 2.1 million immigrants living in Switzerland in 2019.
