Blue Story director sparks BAFTA race row over 'lack of black faces'

Blue Story director sparks BAFTA race row over 'lack of black faces' The director of gritty British drama Blue Story has slammed BAFTA over the "lack of black faces" in this year's nominations.  The shortlist for the 2020 ceremony was announced this morning, and the critically-acclaimed movie failed to get a single mention.  Rapman, who wrote, directed and narrated the picture, has now spoken out against BAFTA - accusing academy members of a lack of diversity.   In a furious post on Twitter , he wrote: " @BAFTA ‘s done Blue Story dirty!! Numbers, Impact, Critic reviews we ticked all boxes but we were still snubbed from all nominations.   "Minus the rising star list. The lack of of black faces is ridiculous. #whosonthepanel ".  The only nod for the film is for star Micheal Ward, who has landed on the shortlist for the Rising Star prize, which recognises an actor's talent rather than their role in a movie.  Rapman, real name Andrew Onwubolu, also retweeted a number of messages from others who were outraged by the lack of diversity among the nominees. A perfect opportunity to honour one of the highest quality - and most significant - British films of 2019. Shame on @BAFTA "  Another stated: "Those BAFTA nominations are beyond a joke. It’s not funny to ignore the creative efforts of women and PoC artists. It’s not a hashtag.  "It’s another reminder that this industry does not welcome or want us and does not think we are good enough."  A third raged: " I don’t wanna say the rising star category isn’t of value but check how many times Black People are only ever in that category. Why do we rarely make the main award? I genuinely want answers."  The film is based on Rapmans YouTube series of the same name and recounts his experiences growing up in south London.  It tells the story of two friends caught up in a gang war as they join rival gangs in different areas.  Blue Story has won strong reviews from critics and has an impressive 92 per cent rating on movie website Rotten Tomatoes.  However, the film has also been mired in controversy when a number of cinema chains cancelled screenings.  It stemmed from a mass brawl outside a cinema in Birmingham, with six teenagers being arrested and around 100 said to have been caught up in the violence.  Vue Cinemas later cancelled all screenings, claiming there had been more than 25 incidents during the first 24 hours of Blue Story screenings in 16 different cinemas.  Rival chain Showcase later followed suit, while Odeon and Cineworld continued to show Blue Story.  The ban was branded racist by critics, and Showcase bosses later reversed the ruling with Vue following suit soon afterwards.  The BAFTA nominations were dominated by supervillain movie Joker, which took a whopping 11 nominations.
