Did the continents spread apart because Earth itself is expanding? The expanding Earth or growing Earth hypothesis asserts that the position and relative movement of continents is due to the volume of Earth increasing. The Expanding Earth Theory, which argues that the reason the continents have spread apart is that the Earth itself has been getting bigger over the years. Five centuries ago, when Europeans saw their first world maps that included the Americas, they noticed something odd: The coastlines of Africa and South America would fit together like a Jigsaw puzzle if they weren’t separated by the expanse of the Atlantic Ocean. The interest in this curiosity would lead to one of geology’s most dubious ideas: the Expanding Earth theory. The theory claimed that millions of years ago, our planet was only about 60 percent of its current size and that the entire surface of this smaller earth was blanketed by land. There were no oceans. Then, as the dwarf Earth expanded, the continental shell spread apart. The seas formed in the gaps between the continents. But in this time everyone believe on the Pangea theory. According to modern geologic understanding, Earth once had all its land area contained within a single supercontinent called Pangaea that sat one side of the globe surrounded by a single ocean. Pangaea then spread into many pieces that drifted across the Earth’s surface and into the positions in which we see them now. This is known as the plate tectonic theory. It states that continents and surface land sit on ‘tectonic plates’ that drift over ocean areas.
But many scientists believe that Earth was originally somewhat smaller and expanded to what it is now. The basis for saying this is the observation that if one takes the dry landmasses (continental regions) and rearranges them onto a smaller sphere whose area is equal to the sum-area of those landmasses, the land appears to fit together like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle.
But The concept of an expanding Earth has been around since the late 19th century but was officially abandoned in favour of plate tectonics in the 1960s.
Have you ever wondered why dinosaurs were so big?
One of the most enduring mysteries about the dinosaurs is their massive size. The largest dinosaurs were several times the mass of the largest Elephant. It wasn't just dinosaurs that were massive on the ancient Earth, there were giant insects and plants that were all much larger than we would expect. Calculations indicate that the dinosaurs’ bones, muscles were too weak to support such massive animals, unless something dramatic had changed. According to the expanding earth theory ancient Earth was so small during the dinosaurs’ time, and there was less gravity. A reduced gravity would make life lighter, so all land-based life could increase in scale with seemingly weak bones, muscles and ligaments. A reduced gravity explains life's large size during the dinosaurs' time.
I have made one video on dinosaurs. Watch it here:
