Sri Lanka’s former defence chief Gotabaya Rajapaksa was declared the winner in the country’s presidential election on November 17, 2019.Gotabaya was Sri Lanka’s defence minister from 2005-2015, during the presidency of his brother Mahinda Rajapaksa. During their administration, authorities brought to a controversial end a decades-long insurgency by the militant group commonly known as the Tamil Tigers. The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) fought for an independent Tamil state in the country’s 26-year civil war, which was sparked by ethnopolitical tensions between the majority Sinhalese population and minority Sri Lankan Tamils.Gotabaya Rajapaksa has now promised to secure the country against militant threats following the deadly Easter bombings in April 2019 that killed more than 250 people.
