Shure SM58 ‘Out of date' Technology? - No Way!!! SM58 Tested! I've seen so much advice handed out on YouTube that totally disregards the dynamic microphone because it's not as flashy (I guess) as a LDC, or even a shotgun.

People focus in on the negatives and not the positives and I'm afraid, for most of us 'normal' (haha) folks out here, we are filming in houses not studios.

I often get surprised by people who normally demo in their treated room and sound great and then decide to wander outside and sound poor!!!

It always makes me smile (even in my own videos) when LDC's are demonstrated in an untreated room, so like all good LDC's, they reproduce not only the voice, but the room sound as well. Frankly, can end up a mess. That's actually why I prefer using LDC's outside actually ….. no walls to reflect from.

The dynamic mics are cheaper, more robust and reject wall reverberations much more effectively than LDC's. They are tuned more into the middle frequencies for the voice and not as extended so they tend not to sound so flashy, but actually, they are brilliant for our mostly horrible (audio wise) rooms.

A brilliant mic in my kitchen or front room sounds awful. Yes, I have tried it. (A Neumann!!!) They seem to pick out all the things I DON'T want to hear whereas even a cheap dynamic can sound better because it only picks out your voice!!

So in this demo, I have used the Shure SM58 in all the conditions that they are not supposed to be used in. I held it out of shot in my awful kitchen (Even shotguns don't work in there). I used it in my mediocre front room, outside in a field both close up and even as a shotgun.

Of course, further away with the gain raised, surrounding sounds will come up as well, but that also happens on shotguns outside in all honesty. I always have problems out the back with traffic noise and birds. Even with shotguns.

Take a listen to this though and see how the SM58 cuts it back...…

I would advise anyone considering a dynamic to not go for a cheapie though. Yes, they are fantastic value, but very few come up to the Shure SM58 in all honesty, which is pretty consistent in most situations as you will hear. It's one of those mics that just sounds pretty good wherever you leave it.

Normally, I EQ the sound in post but on this one, I didn't except for outdoors in the long shot. I flattened the SM58 peaks only and boosted the bass in order to compensate for the lost bass in distance which happens with most mics.

On a proper 'finished' video, I would EQ further, once I'd flattened the peaks, to taste and I would have raised the top end as a whole (with the peaks still flattened) to add sparkle and also used some compression.

Generally, what I do is use the supplied graph by the manufacturers in order to take out as many peaks as I reasonably can and then raise the bass, mid or treble (or a combo) with those cut down peaks still intact. Then I compress for volume.

The SM58 is worth every penny. It's a gem.
