Pedestrians Urged To Use Walkovers

Pedestrians Urged To Use Walkovers Works and Transport Minister Rohan Sinanan is making an appeal for pedestrians to use walkovers instead of risking their lives to cross the nation's highways.

The Ministry of Works and Transport held a Sod Turning Ceremony for the construction of the Valsayn walkover, near the Cipriani Labour College, on Tuesday afternoon.

Minister Sinanan said since 2015, there had been a 50% decrease of road fatalities after the Government commissioned several walkovers. He said however this year there have been fewer accidents but more road fatalities.

The project is expected to cost the Government $10.3 million, 20% less than the original amount budgeted and is expected to be completed by April 2020.

Minister Sinanan said the walkover is part of Government's East -West Corridor Traffic Alleviation Project and while the Curepe Interchange is underway, next on the drawing board are similar projects at Macoya and Piarco.

But he said it's not about building roads and interchanges only, it's also about safety.
