Up Next- Why There's Still Hope for Coral Reefs:
In 2011, only five humpback whales were seen breaching the waters around New York City - dismal numbers for a whale population that once thrived in the area. This year, whale sightings have already reached over 375 unique sightings of various species.
Substantial efforts to curtail whaling around the world, as well as legislation to clean up our oceans, have both contributed to the rebounding numbers of the whale population.
And citizen scientists are helping document the fruit of these labors. Gotham Whale is a unique initiative that encourages sightseers on whale watching tours in New York Harbor to participate in research and data collection.
