"The only choice he [Nat Turner] had was to start a Revolution, a Revolt" these words by Elder H. Khalifah of the Nat Turner Library and owner of the Kujichagulia Village in Southampton County VA echo in my mind 3 years after I took the Nat Turner Trail Tour. Following the historical groundbreaking film The Birth of a Nation by Nate Parker, news about this powerful tour began to spread making the work of Elder Khalifah gain support to preserve this piece of history for African Americans. I decided to make this short video on November 11, 2019 188 years after Nat was hung for Liberating Enslaved African Americans in the very state I served in the military and birthed my son. Had Freedom Fighters like Nat, Gabriel Prosser and Harriet Tubman were cowards, my destiny would've been very different.
When I hear people say "Not Another Slave Movie" in shame of our ancestors and their fight for freedom, it breaks my heart. Our ancestors were NOT in the wrong- they did not commit human trafficking, eat people (read the book The Delectable Negro which talks about how the whites in Southampton Cty devoured Nat's body) lynch people just for being Black, stomp black fetuses and other heinous crimes against humanity. Our ancestors KNEW this was wrong and they gave their all to fight against this. #Insurrection Today I give thanks praises and honor to Nat. I pull from this great man and others who fought tirelessly and gave their lives so that I could be free.
I encourage you to support the Kujichagulia Village to keep its doors open as others are taking funds and profiting off Nat's legacy.
