Top world cities take a step towards clean air Mayors of 35 of the world’s most prominent cities pledged to deliver clean air for their citizens —more than 140 mln people The cities:Amman, Austin, Bengaluru, Barcelona, Berlin, Buenos Aires, Copenhagen, Delhi, Dubai, Durban (eThekwini), Guadalajara, Heidelberg, Houston, Jakarta, Los Angeles, Lima, Lisbon, London, Madrid, Medellin, Mexico City, Milan, Oslo, Paris, Portland, Quezon City, Quito, Rotterdam, Seoul, Stockholm, Sydney, Tel Aviv-Yafo, Tokyo, Warsaw, Washington DC. The pledge was taken at October 11, 2019, at the C40 World Mayors Summit in Copenhagen. C40 is a network of 94 megacities committed to addressing climate change. 9 / 10 world citizens breathe toxic air; 7 mln die prematurely each year: WHO. The poorest and most vulnerable communities are the most affected. Through the C40 Clean Air Declaration, mayors will act steps to cut air pollution. They will implement radical clean air policies by 2025. Steps will include: like low- or zero-carbon public transport, zero-emissions zones, promoting cleaner fuels and air quality monitoring. If these cities reduce their PM2.5 emissions to WHO standards they can avoid at least 40,000 deaths.
