toonviews ep.6: regular show review (oooooooooooooo!) From 2009 - 2011Cartoon Network was facing massive criticism for their decision in green lighting several live-action shows that lacked the quality of their animated shows. Though around that time, they green lit some of their best animated programming such as Adventure Time, Generator Rex, and the one that I’m bringing up today, Regular Show, hello everyone and welcome to geek toons the show where were not gonna take it, and What do Monster Squad, Lover boy, Sylvester Stallone, Back to the Future, Bruce Campbell, 80s Hair Metal, and The Crying Game all have in common? They all have been a punch line, set-up, or reference in Regular Show, there you can always rely on the two slackers having to vanquish some supernatural evil after wanting to do something as simple as play a video game, but since ive seen little to not reviews on the show ive decided to throw my hat in the ring, so without wasting any more time lets get into the history.
The history:-
Now let us go back in time, back to 2005 where a college animator named James garland quintell, back then he was working on a sound film whilst studying at the California institute of the arts, anyway his sound film called the naive man of lollipop land which featured the soon to be known character pops centered on the previously mentioned character trying to make transactions with candy, the short was nominated for multiple awards at the time which eventually landed him a job working as a story board artist on the Joe Murray show camp Lazlo, as well as work interning on the star wars clone wars series the year prior, even though all was going well for the creator, a job and winning awards but his creative juices were still flowing so in 2006 in a collaboration with his friend Steve marrin he created another short called two in the am pm which is literally regular show on drugs, the short was eventually entered into the spike and mike sick and twisted festival of animation, as the years would go on he would work on notable works such as Horton hears a who and Phineas and ferb, but one well known show he worked on was in 2008, (show clip) that’s right the marvelous misadventures of flapjack, and he wasn’t the only person who worked on it alone, there was also Pendleton ward Pendleton ward creator of adventure time, Alex hirche creator of gravity falls, Patrick McHale creator of over the garden wall and Chris ricardy creator of the modifiers, also in 2008 he pitched the show visually with a story board to none other than Craig McCracken and rob rensetti of all people and to his surprise they loved it,and in 2009 his concept got greenlit for its first season.
The premise:-
The show itself is about a multitude of different animals and creatures who live and work in a park. The ones we spend the most amount of time on are Mordecai and Rigby. 2 best friends who work in a park. The two spend most of the episodes doing something against the rules/getting in trouble and thus, have to fix it so they don't get fired by their boss Benson, Regular Show is known for being one of few shows meant for kids that gets away with a lot of mature humor. This was during a time when Cartoon Network was experimenting with shows getting a higher rating then the typical TV-Y7 rating. Meaning that Regular Show could get away with a lot more adult humor than other shows,
