In the united states 50% of all marriages end in a divorce. Legal fees and emotional rollercoasters can run deep. Being in a marriage is already challenging enough. Learning how to fly can also be very challenging. And if you are married or in a serious relationship, becoming a Pilot will present a different set of new challenges that you may not have anticipated.
I’ve been married for 3 years and I talk about some of my own challenges in the video. When you’re attached to someone else and you decided you want to become a pilot, here are some of the things to expect:
The conversation - Depending on where you are in your life or marriage, having the conversation with your partner may go well or not so well. It’s nice to always have the support of our loved ones, but there are safety concerns and anxiety that looms over many people whose spouse decide that want to become a pilot.
Money problems - One of the leading causes of divorce is MONEY. Flight training requires quite a bit of money. A private pilots license alone averages $12,000 - $15,000. If you decide you want to become a commercial pilot, then add another $50,000 - $100,000 to that tab. Flying is expensive and your spouse may have some concerns over where the money is going.
Missing time - Your time with family will be compromised once you start flying. If you’re just getting a private pilots license, then expect to dedicate a lot of your time to flying and studying. And if or when you become a commercial pilot, expect to miss important family events or dates because your schedule will take you out of town often.
These are just some of the problems to consider. Most of these can be easily resolved or come down to a compromise assuming you have an understand and supportive wife or husband.
