Kapila's Story (Cleft Palate Surgery) | Richard Condorelli Memorial Foundation During the 2016 healthcare camp, Kapila visited Dr. Kiran C. Patel Multi-Specialty Hospital in hopes of receiving a life-changing procedure. Kapila was only twelve years old but had suffered her whole life with a cleft palate. This condition has taken a toll on the young girl, affecting her self-esteem and her ability to speak. Dr. Ashok Patel, the founder of Richard Condorelli Memorial Foundation, examine Kapila and noticed the severe cleft in her soft palate. Dr. Patel and the medical team decided to treat her as soon as possible. On February 18, 2016, Kapila was admitted to K.P. Sanghvi Hospital in the nearby city of Surat, Gujarat, India where she was operated on by Dr. Nehal Patel. Dr. Nehal Patel performed a palatoplasty, a surgical procedure that closes the abnormal opening in the soft palate. The operation was successful and Kapila was discharged from the hospital a few days later. Now, Kapila is sixteen years old and exudes confidence and happiness. She is very excited that she is able to speak fluently and have a voice in her community.
